Significance of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan’s main purpose is to provide protection. People often go to temple priests to get a sacred thread tied around their wrists. This is what we see at Varanasi’s Kala Bhairava Temple. Here, people are given a black thread to tie around their wrists. After worshipping the Goddess, people tie a red band to their foreheads at Shri Vaishnodevi Temple, Jammu.

The priest is seen tying a thread around the wrist of the person/s who are performing rituals in Hindu religions. If Yagnopaveetham is kept sacred, it is believed that Yagnopaveetam (sacred cloth across the chest) acts as protection for the wearer.

Mangala Sutra (a string tied around the neck of the bride) has an inner meaning. Kankana Bandhana (a thread tied to each other’s wrists) has an identical inner meaning.

A Rakhi can be tied by more than one brother or sister. A wife could tie a Rakhi to her husband or a Guru-disciple. The Rakhi can be tied to a brother or sister, but it doesn’t have to be between blood relatives. This ritual strengthens the love bond and transcends family boundaries. It is a sign of harmony and goodwill that a Rakhi has been tied around the wrists of close friends and neighbors. This allows one to see beyond the boundaries of one’s own family and to see the whole world (vasudha), Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

Indian religious lore says that Lord Siva is the Father and Goddess Parvati the Mother. My relatives are the devotees of Lord Siva, and I am a member of all three worlds.
